Reward charts for toddlers and how to use them
If you’re a parent then you know how hard it is to get kids (particulraly toddlers) to do anything. It doesnt matter what it is – brushing teeth, putting on shoes, not hiting siblings or cleaning up toys – every conversation can easily become into a battle.
But we know all too well that arguing with tiny versions of ourselves is absolutely futile. Our kids end up getting even more resistive and it becomes a vicious cycle.
That’s where reward charts come in. They help encourage good behavior, complete chores like tidying up their room and discourage bad behavior.
Reward charts can be a powerful way to change children’s behaviour. You give children stickers or points towards a reward when they behave the way you want. The reward reinforces the behaviour you want. It also helps you focus on the positives in children’s behaviour.

How to Use Reward Charts for Toddlers
Reward charts are simple to use and set up. First, choose a reward chart with a theme thats exciting for your child. Then, get some stickers.
Now its time to decide on a particular aspect of your child’s behavior you want to work on. Explain to your child that if they do that task/engage in that behavior, they get to fill up their chart with stickers. Make it sound fun and exciting!
Stick the chart up somewhere like the fridge where your little one can see their progress. Once your child fills up the whole chart with stickers, you can get them a small gift.
Some ideas include:
- A trip to the park
- A small candy
- A coloring book
- Going out for icecream
