If you’re looking to make reptile animals with your kids then egg cartons are a great option. Not only are empty egg cartons something everyone has lying around but the texture of the carton replicates reptile animal skin quite accurately.
My 6 year old and I made an egg carton crocodile today and it turned out looking so real. We were both quite excited.
A lot of the cutting part you’ll have to do, while your kids can enjoy painting, sticking and sprinkling glitter.

Directions to Make an Egg Carton Crocodile
Start off by cutting 3 pieces (joined) from an egg carton. Paint it any shade of green you like. We recently got these Crayola paints for all our arts and crafts projects and couldn’t be happier with them. Not only are the colors so vibrant but they were so affordable. And the best part is that they’re washable! So my kids get them all over the place – their hands, clothes, the table – and I can easily wipe them clean without worrying about any stains left behind.
While you wait for the paint to dry, use green craft paper to cut out the crocodiles arms, legs, a tail and 2 pieces for the mouth. Like this:
Glue each of these pieces to the crocodile’s body. For the mouth, stick 1 piece at the bottom and 1 piece at the top to replicate the way a crocodile opens up its mouth.
Side note: We ended up painting the green craft paper so that it was the same shade of green as the crocodile’s body.
Then take some medium sized googly eyes and stick those on. Use a black marker to make two oval like dots for the nostrils.
The crocodile is nearly done. It just needs some razor sharp teeth to make it look more real. Take some white craft paper and cut large triangle like shapes. Fold each triangle to make a small flap, put some glue on it and attach it to the top and bottom of the crocodiles mouth.
For finishing touches you can sprinkle some green or silver glitter all over the crocodile. I hope you and your kids have a wonderful time trying out this egg carton crocodile craft.
