When starting a blog, one of the biggest obstacles people face is finding the âperfectâ blog name.
Let me save you some time: thereâs no such thing! Too many aspiring bloggers get caught up in brainstorming and overthinking.
Almost any blogger I talk to wishes they had named their blog something else. And yet, despite their name, they’re still making insane amounts of money.
I spent an entire YEAR mulling over my blog name and what I wanted to write about.
In hindsight, I wish I had just set up my blog, chosen a name, started writing, and refined my blog over time. The truth is, the sooner you get started, the sooner youâll see results.
Having said that, there are some things that you should definitely consider before naming your blog.
Here are some actionable and awesome tips to help you pick a name for your blog.
Consider Your Blogâs Focus
First, you need to know what your blog will be about. Your blog name should reflect your chosen topic, so potential readers will immediately understand what they can expect.
If you havenât decided on a blog topic yet, check out my post on choosing a blog topic and profitable blog niches for inspiration.
Understand Your Audience
Your target audience will also influence your blog name. Think about who your readers will be and what kind of tone theyâll respond to.
For instance, a travel blog focused on luxury cruises will have a very different name than one for budget-friendly backpacking tips.
Tailoring your blog name to fit your target audience makes it easier to create content that resonates with them.
Choose a Name You Can Grow With
When choosing a blog name, it’s important to keep your blog topic in mind BUT it’s also wise to keep it broad and versatile.
I want you to learn from my blogging mistakes (I made a TON of them)
When I started my blog, SweetnSourToddlers, I was sure I only wanted to focus on the topic of parenting toddlers.
At the time, I hadnât considered that Iâd also want to share tips on working from home, side hustle ideas, and blogging.
I eventually realized that my blog name limited my content expansion.
The lesson I want you to learn here? Choose a name that allows you the flexibility to cover other interests and topics as your blog evolves.
A broad, adaptable name gives you room to grow and keeps you from feeling boxed in as your passions and expertise expand.
Tip: do keep in mind that despite the fact that I no longer like my blog name, i still make awesome amounts of passive income from my blog. This shows that while your blog name is important, whats MORE important is providing readers with high quality, honestly written content that helps make their life easier.

Once you have your blogâs topic and target audience in mind, itâs time to brainstorm names. Here are some tips to guide you:
1. Brainstorm Keywords
Grab a pen and paper and jot down words associated with your blogâs topic and audience. This is a great way to capture your initial ideas.
2. Use a Thesaurus
Expand your list by finding synonyms for the words you brainstormed. Sometimes, a fresh or unexpected term can make a blog name more unique and memorable.
For example, let’s say you are starting a blog about quick and healthy meal ideas for kids.
Look up synonyms for the word “healthy” which will lead to very interesting words you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of.
3. Experiment with Word Combinations
- Adjective + Noun: Crafty Traveler, Budget Beauty
- Noun + Verb: Plant Whisperer, Sun Seeker
- Noun + Noun: Coffee Compass, Rainbow Roads
- Three Words: Bake Write Play, Travel Eat Love
4. Consider Using Your Own Name
If you have a unique or easily recognizable name, using it can help create a personal brand.
For instance, Alex Explores or Smithâs Slice are options that provide flexibility to pivot your content over time while giving readers a sense of who you are.
5. Try Alliteration
Alliteration occurs when the same consonant sounds are repeated at the beginning of words that are positioned close to one another in a sentence or phrase.
Alliterative names are catchy and easy to remember.
For example, Wanderlust Willa for a travel blog, or Frugal Fiona for a budget-focused blog.
6. Pair Unrelated Words
Combining unrelated words can make your blog name intriguing.
Think of interesting opposites or words that can catch attention.
Ideas include: Velvet Citrus for a lifestyle blog, Pixel Giraffe for a creative or design-focused blog, and Rusty Petals for a gardening or DIY blog.
7. Use Another Language
Foreign words add an elegant touch and can often make your blog name feel unique. For example:
- BelleCuisine (French for âBeautiful Cuisineâ) for a food blog
- Aurora Journals (inspired by âAurora,â meaning dawn) for a travel or photography blog
8. Create a Twist on Common Phrases
Twist familiar sayings or phrases into your blog name for a memorable title.
Examples: Bite the Bullet Journal for productivity or journaling content, or Cloud Nine Times for a lifestyle blog centered on positivity.
9. Mash Up Two Words
Merging words is an effective way to make your blog name memorable. Examples:
- Purrsonality (Purr + Personality) for a cat or pet-focused blog
- Veggiecious (Veggie + Delicious) for a plant-based or cooking blog
9-Point Checklist Before Finalizing Your Blog Name
After brainstorming a few potential names, run them through this quick checklist to make sure youâre on the right track:
- Keep it Short: Aim for one to three words maximum. A short name is easier to remember and type.
- Make it Memorable: Choose a name with a catchy rhythm, alliteration, or unexpected twist to help it stick.
- Keep it flexible: Choose a broad blog name that allows room to grow. While it may be tempting to pick something specific to your current interests, remember that your blog focus might expand over time. A flexible name gives you the freedom to explore other topics without feeling restricted, so you can evolve your content as your passions and audience grow
- Check Domain Availability: Make sure the domain name is available, ideally as a .com. Check your domain name availability here on Bluehost.
- Choose an Easy-to-Spell Name: Avoid complex words or tricky spellings so readers can find your site easily.
- Look at It Without Spaces: Sometimes words run together awkwardly in URLs. Double-check that your name reads well without spaces.
- Secure Social Media Handles: Claim your name on popular social media platforms to build a cohesive online brand.
- Avoid Hyphens: Domain names with hyphens can be harder to remember and may lead to typos.
- Google It: Search for your blog name to see if itâs already used by someone else. If itâs trademarked, you might need to pick something else to avoid legal issues.
