1. Get a low frame toddler bed
When making the transition from a cot to a bed, it’s always best to opt for a toddler bed rather than a twin sized bed.
A toddler bed is smaller than a regular sized bed and will help make your child feel more secure at night time when sleeping as it will be more appropriately sized.
It’s important to get a low frame toddler bed so that even if your child rolls off, the distance between the bed and floor is negligable and won’t cause an injury.
You might be tempted to spring for a twin bed that will last your child for years to come. But a toddler-specific bed is a better choice. It’s lower to the ground and the mattress is smaller both of which make it easier for very young children ages 15 months and up to climb in and hop out without getting hurt.

2. Put the matress on a carpetted flooring
This is a hack that I felt the most comfortable with and helped me sleep at night knowing my little one was safe.
If you know your toddler tosses about at night and you are worried for their safety, it’s best to try this option.
My kids have carpetting on the floor. So I simply put the mattress directly on the carpetted flooring. This gave me the comfort of knowing that even if my toddler rolled off the bed at night, she’d only touch the carpet and wouldn’t get hurt in any way.
The other benefit of placing the mattress directly on the carpet is that it allows your toddler more independence(this is in line with the montessori approach which encourages a room set up that encourages independence)
Kids are able to easily get into and out of bed with ease and without any assistance. This is particularly helpful when you start night time training toddlers when getting out of the bed easily and safely is a key component.

3. Get a good quality bed rail guard or bumpers
Another brilliant hack to stop your toddler from falling out of bed is to use bed rails or bumpers. Both have their own benefits.
Bed rail guards secure to the side of the bed and create a barrier. This prevents kids from rolling off the bed. You can get rails that fit around all four sides to create a kind of crib inside the bed. Or you can opt to get a bed rail for one side of the bed while the other side of the bed is pushed against the wall. This is an ideal way to prevent fallings.
Bed bumpers can be used for older toddlers. They fit snuggly under the bedsheets and create a barrier to prevent falls.
4. Create your own bed bumpers
Another option is to create your own bed bumpers. This can be especially helpful when youre travelling and your child is sleeping in a hotel bed or any bed that’s not their own.
One method is to take a large beach towel, lay it flat and then and roll it. Then take the rolled up towel and secure it under a fitted bed sheet. Put another sheet on top of that to ensure its even more secure.
Another option is to use a pool noodle. Take a large pool noodle and if it’s hollow then stuff it with a smaller pool noodle to make it more sturdy. Then secure it under a fitted sheet with another bed sheet on top.
5. Put the bed against the wall/in the corner of he room
One method to reduce chances of a night time fall is to place your child’s bed next to the wall. This way one side of the bed is secure. You can also put the bed in the corner of the room. This will ensure that two sides are safely secured. That way you only need to put a single bed rail on one side of the bed to prevent a fall.
This will also help create a more cozy environment for your child. They may like being snug in the corner of the room rather than the center of the room.
Just make sure that the bed is far from any outlets or windows.
6. Place soft cushioning on the floor besides the bed
Toddlers are rather squirmy creatures. And despite your best efforts at prevention, they may still fall out of bed.
So it’s important to make sure that the area surrounding the bed is soft and snug. Place a soft cuddly area rug like this one around the bed and place soft cushioning like pillows or beanbags besides the bed (check out this super cute bean bag storage bag that doubles as a beany and also a stuffy storage!).
This is another good option for toddlers; they’re interlinking foam mats but it actually looks like a super chic rug and will blend with the decor in almost any room.
These measures will ensure that even if your child rolls off, it’s a soft landing.
7. Create a safe sleep environment
It’s super important to make sure that you create a safe sleep environment for your child. Take care of the following factors:
- Ensure the bed is not close to windows, blinds, cords or electrical outlets
- Clear the area around the bed. Make sure there aren’t any toys or other objects that your little one may step on or trip on in case they get up in the middle of the night
- Remove furniture pieces next to the bed. This includes night stands, particularly those with sharp edges. Your child could roll off the bed, hit the furniture piece and bump their head
- Always anchor furniture pieces like book shelves and toy racks to the wall. You can do this using sturdy furniture straps like these to anchor furniture pieces to the wall and prevent kids from serious injury

Other equally important sleep safety measures you can take include:
- Getting a humidifier for the room which ensures your child’s nasal passageway stays clear and they get a good nights sleep (this is the cool mist humidifier we use and loooove)
- Getting a good night light which can help prevent night time accidents like accidently slipping, tripping and stumbling upon night time awakenings
- A baby camera with video so you can keep a watchful eye on your toddler even through the night (this one on Amazon is super affordable and has good reviews)
- Switching from a regular mattress (that is full of harmful chemicals!) to an organic, non-toxic, safe mattress
